I have achieved a great deal of success and raised multi-millions of dollars since the start of my official journey in fundraising back in 2009.
The first fundraising experience I had was when I was a little boy growing up in the middle of the Syrian desert. My family are tribal nomadic Bedouins who roamed from one place to another following the grass and water. Many Bedouins never really cared about education and always wanted their children and youngsters to help the adults in taking care of the camels and sheep, so putting together some funds to have a school ‘tent’ in the community was not a great idea to the adults and most of the children! I used to walk for about 2KM daily to go to the nearest school ‘tent’ and sometimes a mud classroom (depending on where we settled!).
One day at a social gathering with many tribal leaders, I was asked if I went to school.
Yes, I said! One of the guests said his children do not go as it is too far.
I thought this was the perfect opportunity for me to ask the tribal leaders to contribute money to buy a school tent, so the government could sponsor a teacher and myself and other Bedouin kids could attend school in our community. After a few minutes of discussion and highlighting the responsibilities they agreed to build the first school tent in our area which benefited around 21 children including me.
Fifteen years later, I discovered that what I had done is a type of professional activity called ‘Fundraising’ and what the tribe had done is called Private Public Partnership (PPP).
I mastered my fundraising skills and I’m proud of my history and achievements as a fundraiser that has helped to save the lives of millions of people and helped to conserve and protect our planet and its species.
Due to my fundraising efforts, there are now a number of hospitals built and hundreds of thousands of men, women and children treated and protected from different diseases. I am continuing to drive a positive change in many charitable sectors, not only as a fundraiser leading and planning fundraising activities but also as an advisor and consultant working with the region’s leading philanthropists such as HRH Prince Abdulaziz Bin Ahmad Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in the Prevention of Blindness Union and other humanitarian initiatives.
“ Abdulla raised over US$ 86 million in the past 10 years for multiple organisations and governmental institutions ”
I have led the fundraising activities for many international organisations out of Dubai and the Middle East such as Sightsavers, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Prevention of Blindness Union (PBU).
I have also led international donor forums and helped to put together sovereign proposals that raised around US$ 86 million.
I did not become a fundraising expert overnight and I am always expanding my knowledge! I have developed my skills and invested a lot of time and money in learning the best methods of understanding human behaviour and how to be a great fundraiser.
I have always wanted to share my knowledge and expertise to people who want to master their fundraising performance and be leaders!
